My name is Kenya Ramirez and I am a senior at Texas State University. I am a digital media innovation major with a minor in psychology. I am a first-generation college student, so my college experience has both been exciting yet nerve-wracking. I'm from Laredo, Texas, which is a predominantly Hispanic community on the Mexican-American border. I have a lot of pride about where I'm from and where my immigrant family is from.
One of my pass-times includes writing in my journals and writing for my blog. My blog's name is Let's Get Better Treatment which is mostly about my personal experiences being in the LGBT community. I also interview people from the LGBT community and they share their own experiences about being LGBTQ+. I hope to expand my blog more and use it as a platform to raise awareness. I feel like my blog could be considered a safe space for people in the community. I want to be able to help young queer people accept their sexuality and express themselves freely.
When I graduate college I hope to one day work for a nonprofit organization that helps fight for equality and justice. The two topics I am most passionate about are immigration and LGBTQ issues. I would really enjoy to use my digital media background to help run their social media campaigns and design their webpages. I think it is really important for me as an educated young Hispanic woman to give a voice to those who aren't as fortunate as me to have one. I am in a position where I have the resources and the support system to be able to fight for those who can't fight for themselves, and I want to do my part to make sure that everyone lives in a society that offers freedom and equality for all.
